So, after beating both We Were Here and We Were Here, Too, my friend @renguji and I decided to go back in to try and piece together the backstory of the castle. For anyone not familiar with We We Here, these are co-op puzzle solving games where your aim is to escape a castle by voice chatting with your partner via walkie-talkies, AKA the game's voice chat system.

This post will contain spoilers for both games, though they are plot spoilers and not puzzle solutions, so please proceed with caution!

So, after beating both We Were Here and We Were Here, Too, my friend @renguji and I decided to go back in to try and piece together the backstory of the castle. Please forgive me if I mess up some of the names. I didn't think to screenshot the books, so I'm going off memory alone here.
Castle Inhabitants:

  • Brutus, the king, who is slowly driven insane presumably by a combination of grief over the death of his children, his marriage slowly falling apart, and general paranoia about his kingdom
  • Leonora, the queen, driven to a deep depression over the death of her youngest daughter and even farther into depression after two of her sons die in a bloody battle
  • Katja and ??? (I can't remember, I'm sorry), the king's surviving daughters.
  • Christina (I believe this is her name), the youngest daughter. A sickly child and died at three years old
  • Valdemar and Jon, princes who died in 'horrendous bloodshed'
  • Philip, the youngest son, taken ill with 'Devil's Fire,' which is presumably some kind of measles or chicken pox that doesn't appear to have killed him, but left bloody blisters on his body and seems to have done brain damage, possibly due to high fever
  • The Marionette, as seen in the first game, reappears at several points here. We currently have a working theory that the Marionette is whatever's left of the Court Jester.

Plot as seen from the player:

  • Upon arriving in the castle, the peasant's first room has three coffins. These belong to, presumably, Christina, Valdemar, and Jon.
  • In the peasant's sacrifical altar/cultist looking room with the eight-pointed star on the floor, we see a letter from someone whose name has been torn off to the king. In the lord's room we see a letter from someone to the king, presumably Leonora, as well as a book talking about some kind of blood ritual.
  • The staircase book tells about the relic room, the youngest son, and the queen's depression, but the armory and the spike hall have no books.
  • In the stained glass window room, we see windows depicting, presumably: the king (obvious), the dead queen (blonde woman either pierced by an arrow or throat slit with a dagger), dead Katja (the female figure pierced with three arrows, since a later letter says she likes to hunt), the King's other daughter (redhead with a slit throat or stabbed with a sword), and the king's sons (short beard = Jon and long beard = Valdemar?).
  • The stained glass room also has a game board with knights, who are presumably Valdemar and Jon, that you can move around the board. The last voice cue says something like 'A trap! My sons, what have I done?' indicating it might be the king's bad battle decisions that got both his sons killed.
  • The maze room has a book with a letter from the lady-in-waiting to Jon explaining the existence of the arena
  • The book in the locked room after the incinerator puzzle mentions that the jester gave the king some kind of ritual to do that might save them.

Roughly chronological plot:

The king's two sons perish in battle around the same time as the death of his youngest daughter. The queen, already emotionally exhausted from caring for her sickly daughter, becomes highly depressed and shuts herself off in her room. Only her daughters, the lady-in-waiting (presumably named Meike), and the maids are allowed to see her. As a way to try to mend their relationship, the king thinks that for whatever reason they can bond over some kind of relic room/burial chamber for their children, which is where the lord character begins the game.

We Were Here Too For Mac Computers

This plan, obviously, doesn't really work. The king gets more desperate because now he has no heirs, and starts sleeping around trying for bastard sons (all the bastard sons die very young). He also appears to become more paranoid over the state of his kingdom in general, and for whatever reason sets up an arena somewhere in the middle of the castle where people battle to the death to entertain the courtiers like they're in ancient Rome. At some point during this mess, the lady-in-waiting falls in love with Jon and is charged with treason (wrongly), after which she's sentenced to battle for her life (aka just die) in the arena. It's also possible that she survived the trial, got dropped into the incinerator/dungeon like the peasant, and then was used as a ritual sacrifice.

Now stuck with no male heirs, the king has gotten desperate. The Court Jester appears to him with some king of blood ritual to be performed on the next Red Moon. Our current working assumption based on the lord's book that said something about innocent maiden's hair (after which the names of the king's daughters and presumably the lady-in-waiting are listed) and bloodshed… Well, it looks like the guy sacrificed his wife and daughters. We don't know the outcome of the ritual, but based on the current state of the castle, I'm assuming it wasn't good.

Theories:

  • The Castle is the Same: This seems to be a pretty common theory based on the number of people who share our second theory, but we think that there were originally four explorers. Two got separated and went to one side of the castle, setting off the flare for the two that we play as during the second game.
  • We're Gonna Rescue a Dude: Another working theory of ours which also seems to be pretty common is that the third game will be some kind of rescue mission for the person left behind.
  • The Knights are the King's Guard: The last book is a letter from the king that says something about his guard, and we think he may have killed them based on (1) the fact that no one is alive and (2) the bit from the play in the first game where it says that the king killed all he could. In any case, the four knights in the armory and the hall with the spikes could potentially be the King's Guard.
  • The Marionette is The Jester: I haven't actually seen anything about this theory, probably because everywhere I've looked is full of comments saying 'herp derp I didn't read the books.' However, between the marionette quite obviously having a jester's hat and what looks like motley garb, the book that says the Jester gave the King this ritual, and the fact that the marionette is obviously evil since he kills the librarian in the first game, I think it's a good theory. Thanks to @renguji for that one.

Things we still don't know:

We Were Here Too For Mac Catalina

  • We still don't know exactly what made the King go quite this bonkers
  • No confirmation on the marionette theory, and no confirmation on what happened to the family
  • Who's the creepy voice? It could be the king or the Jester/marionette, though the marionette doesn't speak in the first game, but it probably depends on the outcome of that freaky occultist ritual… which we obviously don't know.
  • WHY DO THEY HAVE SO MUCH MAGMA UNDER THE FLOORS?WHY IS THERE AN INCINERATOR CELL? WHERE IS THIS CASTLE WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE COOKING??? You're giving me a whole new definition of the floor is lava, my dudes.
